Travel Tips
I believe that you apply for Section 8 in Austin, Texas at the local Housing Authority Office. I will tell you that in the past few years there has been a long waiting list and usually they have a sign up day that is announced in the Austin American Statesman and usually by the end of the day they have signed up a waiting list for the whole year. Section 8 is worth signing up for. If you get on the waiting list it may be a long time before your name is selected, but when it is the benefits are really great. Section 8 works in that private landlords can sign up to rent their property to people that are qualified to receive the assistance. Then, depending upon the family income, the Section 8 program pays the rent/utilities, or a part of it depending upon income. There are nice homes that are available for rental this way, and lots of apartments too.

I would like to suggest to you that you probably would also qualify to rent an apartment in a tax credit complex. This is an apartment complex where owners get tax credits for agreeing to rent only to people within a certain income bracket. There is a minimum income and maximum income set for families of a certain size (sometimes from 1-8 people). I have managed several tax credit properties and it is sometimes referred to as "affordable housing" as well. It is a wonderful program for single mothers, who frequently have a one income family so they are making money, but not a lot, and still have to provide housing for their children. There are many nice, newer apartment complexes in Austin that fit into this category. I do not know about Tupelo, MS. To find these properties, look in the Austin Apartament Guide, or For Rent Magazine - you can get these by looking at Walmart or your local grocery store (HEB has them in the free publications racks at the front of the store). Look for apartments that say "some income restrictions may apply. There are several in all areas of the city. They have really good amenities (pools, etc) nice sized apartments, and some other benefits for children. The one that I managed in Austin several years ago had 1 - 4 bedroom apartments and 360 apartments. There were over 500 children on site. There was a day care, an after school program and a free lunch program during summer for anyone under 18. Try looking at Southwest Housing properties - there are others too, but I know that southwest has great programs for their residents - education, credit toward down payments on a house, etc.
In other areas than housing, go to the Department of Human services and apply for everything that you are eligible for. Texas has a good program for insurance for low income kids. There is free day care or reduced costs according to income for mothers who have low income but need to work. Check out everything that you qualify for. If you are able to better your situation through this assistance, it allows your children to do well, and you to prosper to the point that you will be paying taxes that will eventually help someone else. Do not feel bad about anything that is offered. It is there to help people in your situation and your children deserve to have a good life. Work hard and educate yourself - never too late to improve! Good luck.
