Don't do it!

110 degrees and 110% humidity 6 months out of the year? No, thanks.

Bug and roach spray!
You asked a perfectly good question and got silly retorts for answers. Let me apologize for those because most Austin people are helpful and friendly. It is not 110 degrees 6 months out of the year and certainly the humidity is not anywhere near that either but you probably know that already if you are planning a move to Austin. The humidity never has bothered me since I find it a dry heat here compared to the area I used to live. Swimming pools, lakes, air conditioned cars and buildings take care of the heat, or you can just stay home and watch a movie! I think the weather is wonderful. If you like snow, you will be disappointed but there is almost never really cold weather, you can usually wear shorts in December and swim many more months out of the year than in most other places. That also means that golfing, baseball, walking the trails all over the city and other outdoor activities can be enjoyed most months of the year. Also, the comment about roach and bug spray is not really correct either. Anytime that you live in a place that has trees (Austin has many live oaks and cedars which stay green all year long) as well as other trees too, you will have insects. I lived both in apartments and houses. I took precautions by not leaving out food that would attract them, putting out little roach motels, etc. and never had a bug problem anywhere I lived.

In short, I love Austin. I have lived in many places, and it is my favorite. I wish that I knew more about what tips would help you. Do you need tips on finding a job, house, apartment??? What would help you? Please clarify. Austin is a vital, growing city. There is always something fun or interesting or educational to do. There are good schools and not so good schools as in any city. It is not hard to find the good ones. There is good housing in all areas of the city. Trick is to find out where you will be working and then find a place close to work. It is easier than finding a place to live first and then finding out you have a 20 mile commute. Music events reign here. There is live music played all over town 7 nights a week, and music venues for every taste from classical, jazz, rock, country - anything. There is music to suit every taste and every age group. Living in Texas has some other perks - no state income tax, no tax on groceries or pharmaceuticals. Property taxes are rather high all over the state because this is the way the state supports itself.. Again, no income tax, so it is a trade off.

One of my best tips is get ready to shop at HEB. It is a great grocery chain. I shopped several of the stores around the city - seems like there are many and growing numbers. They have store brands that compare to national brands, and I have never purchased any of their store brands that I was not pleased with. Please edit your question and add what topics you need addressed. Maybe you will get more serious answers. Welcome. You will like it here. I always find that if you are a good neighbor you find good neighbors. Good luck on the move.

dont live in the ghetto and dont staire at people you dont kno k? then ur probly good
i definitely agree with kathy. you have gotten horrible answers (except for kathy's wonderful report that basically covered what i was going to say.... lol)

in short-
make sure that you are moving into a house/apartment that can easily get you to where you need to be. austin has a problem with traffic. make sure that you are leaving 5 minutes earlier than you need to be in case of traffic.

there are a ton of fun places to go and eat at, like:
county line
ski shores
lucy's boatyard
hula hut
bess' bistro (sandra bullocks new restaurant)
z tejas

all of these have a wonderful austin vibe to them.... there is nothing better!

there are a lot of other sights to see- the capitol, the bob bullock museum, etc. Things that have to do with austin culture. it is really very interesting.

best places to live in austin-
TARRYTOWN/PEMBERTON- close to everything you need. 5 minutes from the grocery store, 5 minutes to the nearest school, 5 minutes away from great restaurants. wonderful! kind of pricy, but if you have the money and you can grab a house (houses normally sell within a day to 2 days from the day they go on the market, or so my family has experienced), so if you are wanting to move there, make sure you pounce on a house if you see one that you like.
BARTON CREEK- you can get larger houses for cheaper prices because of the location. located away from more, but still not super far away from places.
TRAVIS COUNTRY- you're pretty close to a bunch of things....
just stay away from west austin (i think that's the area)..... kinda ghetto. remain in the areas that i've mentioned and you are sure to have those friendly neighbors that austin is so well known for.....

hope this helped some!
I LOVE AUSTIN. i lived with my brother while he went to UT. if moving to austin don't bring so much crap, you won't need it if you're living in the city. most austin residents are up-to-date and earthy. plan on getting fit and doing outdoor activities because austin is full of that. people love the lake. the main adjectives for austin are music, earthy, and new. bring a sense of adventure and friendliness. There aren't very many old parts of austin and the parts that are are in the main city and have been renovated or kept "vintagy." everyone there is young b/c it's a college town and its very smart to get invloved in the community b/c thats how people live there.

btw, au contrar, its dry there. not humid.
