I want to move to Austin, TX? SMart MOve? |
Travel Info I am coming from Las Vegas, NV. I have been around Nor Cal for almost my whole life, and I reside in Las Vegas, NV Currently. Vegas is great, but like California it is getting expensive, and to come and think about it would i really want to raise a family in Sin CIty?.. Ive been looking at houses, there and i was wondering if any locals can verify that, the houses are shockingly cheap. ive seen houses for as little 200k, some of em even in the 180's. Is this for real?..LOL.. ive seen em in the suburbs like san marcos, round rock and pflugerville. they say its a great city. obviously less crime than las vegas. I am getting my degree in nursing. do u think its a smart move? Travel Tips Yes, this would be a VERY smart move. Austin has great friendly people, it's a beautiful city with wonderful parks, and a gorgeous skyline. And yes, housing is much cheaper here is Austin. I live in a nice neighborhood in N. Austin and my house is 3,200 sq ft, it only cost 180,000 brand new about 3 years ago. That would cost you way more in California. We don't have that much crime here so I think its safe. If you've ever shopped at Whole Foods in NV i'm sure you liked it. The store started here in Austin and we have the landmark store, it's an awesome grocery store, with a restaurant, and huge departments, ie: dairy, chesse, meat, ect... As for parts of town, I'd avoid anything E. of I-35 (East Austin) they have a bad rep. We also have great school districts if you have any children. If you are a laptop/notebook computer user, downtown has free Wi-Fi for everyone. Look out for COA_MESH it's Austins Wi-Fi. I guarantee you'll love Austin, and will never move anywhere else. P.S. Don't even consider San Antonio, you'll be bored the next day. There is nothing to do, it's way to conservative, down town is ugly, and you'll want to stay away from the S. Side...Ugg! If for some reason you pick San Antonio, I'd move to the N. or N.E. Sides of town they are the nicest parts of town. If you have kids the school districts (North East ISD and North Side ISD) are the best in town. You'll want to move to the area near 1604 and I-35 those are the nicest. Areas to avoid are the S. Side, E. Side, W. Side, SW. Side, and SE. Side. (These are the ugliest parts of town) Others My uncle went to university 'university of texas at Austin' and lived there for around 10 years, and he said that he liked it. But it is for you to decide. Austin is a wonderful city its gorgeous and nice and you will love it. i honestly haven't been to Austin, but I have been to other places in Texas. and Yes, Texas houses are a lot cheaper than in California, although the prices differ between living in the big cities or on the country side. but yeah, u can get houses in Texas at a price fo with you would have to live in a box in California. I know some people who live in Austin and the really love it. It is supposed to be beautiful. I live in a 4 bedroom house that only cost 135k and it is a 1250 sq ft and it is in south austin..........the futher notrth you want the more expensive it is...............and there are lots of hospitals and clinics that you can work in...........one more thing I do not really like the traffic here but they are building more toll roads Yes, housing is much cheaper in Texas than in California, but you'll likely have to take a pay cut to live here in Austin. Another post brought up a good point - cost of living is MUCH less in Austin than in NorCal, but pay rates will probably be lower as well. I have a friend who's an RN here and her salary is great for the area (somewhere around $80K/year). Housing is reasonably priced here, average of about $125 per square foot depending on location and age of the property. There's a wide range of housing types and neighborhoods, too. My house in the nice suburban southwest part of the city is 20 years old, interior remodeled 5 years ago, 3/2.5, 1600sf, and I bought it for the original listing price of $155,000 in spring 2005. |
