Any advice for anyone studying abroad in Germany?

Travel Info
I am not there yet, but I will be soon, and I was looking for advice on some unusual, if any, customs or just whatever is useful. Thank you, and no worries!

Travel Tips
I spent a year there. It was amazing. I still keep in contact with the people I lived with there.
First of all, I noticed that the German youth have a lot more freedom and take a lot more personal responsibility than people of the same age in the US. You'll like that.

The only downside was one you'd encounter anywhere: people ask questions about America as if you were personally involved. I was asked after the Columbine shooting: "Why are Americans so violent?"

It's a fun country. Women don't really wear makeup. Even teachers and bank tellers. They just don't.

Oh, and in many small towns, everything closes from noon till one or two while everyone takes lunch.

Gas is expensive, and after, like, 9, only one gas station is open. You have to check the paper.

The most fun holiday: Fashing. You just have to be there.

It's a terrific experience. You're going to have a great time. Really immerse yourself. And even though everyone in (former West) Germany speaks English, ask them not to speak it with you. It will hold you back.

If you'd like a penpal, you can write me k8armstrong@yahoo.com. I'd love to answer any questions you had. Some things are regional, and I lived in 3 different parts of Germany.

It is a different culture. It will be hard at times. But you'll never forget it your whole life. It's going to change you forever.
