Travelling in Germany for a few days- between Stuttgart & Frankfurt - any suggestions re: Must-See places??

Thinking of stopping in Heidelberg, maybe Heppenheim. Just want to spend a few days in a unique, and safe city/town. I'm interested in visiting castles, churches, christmas markets etc. or any other interesting sites, but not into too much touristy places. Will be visiting late October. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - Cheers:)
