Will I need a passport to get off my cruise ship in the Bahamas?

I'm boarding a Carnival Cruise on 4/12 and I thought I could use my birth certificate. But someone told me that I won't be able to get off the boat without a passport?

Not true. If you are a US citizen and you go on a cruise and leave from a US port, you do not need a passport. You do need a photoID and your birth certificate.Next year may be a different story. Enjoy the Bahamas.
