I live in Barbados, how do you meet and make friends here?

I always thought Barbados a friendly place, till I moved here, now I find it hard to make friends. Being female I dont want to turn up at bars by myself (people get the wrong idea). So how do I meet other ladies and men for friendships (non sexual). I dont work at present, so I dont have work colleagues and family are very religious - so are more interested in getting me into church.
