i went to an awesome italian restaurant, and of course i cant remember where the hell it was. when i was there i just basically got lost and walked around.... damn that really doesnt help u out much, sorry.
Brussels is a pretty small city. It's famous for a little statue in the centre of the city called the Mannequin Pis (yep - really is a statue of a little boy/cherub taking a leak.)

The best thing about Brussels and Belgium however is the beer. Often brewed by trappist monks - try Leffe and any of the fantastic fruit beers. Moules et frites is the national dish (mussels and fries) and are served with mayonnaise. Asking for ketchup can be met with surprise.

Whatever you do - have fun.
Personal experience.
There is a small section of the city that I would dub the "old City". It has a bunch of outdoor restaurants and tables for drinking. It is pretty nice. It is close to the status of the little boy peeing. I would go there and drink good beer. There are sampler beer specials and I did that and it was awesome. Also eat lots of chocolate.
I would definitely stay in the city center so you can be near the action. Might be a little bit more expensive - but you will get more bang for your buck. If you're a hostel type - I'm sure there is a hostel.

Visit Brussels old town with a walking tour of the old city. Continue past Town Hall and St. Hubert Gallerie, wind down Butchers' Street and visit the Manneken-Pis.

Walking is a great way to experience a city - especially only when you have a short time there. You will be able to get the flavor and feel and decide if you want to return one day.

The museums are closed on Mondays - so can't visit those.

Don't forget to drink a beer and eat some chocolate!
