Brussels: can anyone tell me anything about living there? |
Travel Info Areas to live, things to do... I might be moving there soon and have no idea what to expect. I know it's a tiny little city and I'm afraid I'll be bored there. Travel Tips Regarding the areas to live : Brussels is divided in 19 "communes", I would recommend : Uccle, Etterbeek, Watermael-Boitfort, ... being the best. Please note that in Brussels, all the names are written both in French and Flemish, because of the 2 belgian communities, this might really confuse a foreigner. While it quite easy to understand that Louvain (in French) equals to Leuven (in Flemish), not so easy to catch that "Notre-dame au bois" (in french) = Jezus-Eik (in flemish) ... a part from that Brussels is really quite a nice city Source(s): A belgian Other Travel Tips Hmm. Tiny compared with what? There's about 2 million people in the metropolitan area. Brussels is full of nice little bars where you can drink a really wide variety of beers. It has good restaurants, and a beautiful town square. Of course it's the center of the EU Parliament as well as NATO, and that means that it has the places to entertain international visitors. It's a short train ride from a couple of other historic cities, and of course a easy day trip from several others. It has a solid symphony orchestra in a beautiful concert hall. I think unless you're coming from New York or London or Paris you're going to find yourself pleased with how much there is to do there. Paul S is right! Brussels is a capital, not a small village in the countryside! You can find lots of things: pub, restaurants, clubs, museums, theatre, and another entertaining... I hope you speak French, it will help you to make friends who will show you the best places in Brussels! PS: Forget the Mannenken Pis, that's a huge tourist trap! Bye! Apparently, the chocolate is very good but I'm not too sure about the sprouts! |
