Can you suggest what are the must see's and do's in Brussels and Antwerp.? |
Travel Info I plan on stuffing my face with chocolate and beer!! Travel Tips While stuffing your face with chocolate and beer, don't forget Belgium's other two food groups: waffles and fries! And don't worry about counting calories: you'll walk them right off! Plus, you're on holiday, right? In Brussels, start at the Grand'Place, right in the heart of downtown. It's a magical square that almost overwhelms you. Feel free to walk down the block to the Manneken Pis, Brussels' unofficial mascot. Take a picture to show the folks back home. Other than that, there aren't a lot of "must-sees" in Brussels. If you're a huge fan of European politics, you can check out the European district on the east side of town. If you like comics (or graphic novels), check out the Comic Strip Museum. It might be good if you're British -- I'm American, so I wasn't familiar with most of the comics on display. I'd spend the rest of the time strolling. The two Sablon squares (Grand and Petit) have impressive shopping (and world-class chocolate). Honestly, the most fun I have in Brussels is going from bar to bar to bar. Many of them have been in business since the 1900's and have incredibly gorgeous art nouveau interiors. Plus even better beer at generally reasonable prices! My favorites for visitors include "A la Mort Subite", "Le Falstaff", "Le Cirio"... Hell, you really can't go wrong. Order a lambic (that's the local stuff, often fruit-flavored, but better than that sounds) and enjoy! I don't know beans about Antwerp, I'm afraid. I can, however, recommend Ghent as a terrific Flemish burg. Lovely churches and canals, and the local castle (s'Gravensteen) has a wicked good torture chamber. Excellent mussels and fries can be had here as well. It's a bit more "lived-in" than Bruges, with far fewer tourists, but it has all the benefits of a well-run, well-preserved medieval city. Enjoy your trip! I'm jealous -- I'd love to go back! Others Antwerp there is a just the diamond area not much there and prices are not really that good its a joke ,their is a church that has some paintings by a famous italian artist other then that there is nothing to see in in that town.brussels take the city bus tour you will see everything the main square is the miost intresting party of town The great "must do" in Brussels is to get the hell out, because Brussels is to Belgium what Buffalo is to upstate NY: the biggest city, but least interesting to tourists. Better places to spend a night: Brugge (Bruges in old English) is one of the most beautiful and oldest cities in Europe. 75 minutes from Brussels by train. Gent (on the railway line Brussel-Brugge) is similar to Brugge but much more modern: all 1600s architecture instead of 1400s. Still old, isn't it? And Antwerp is Belgium's biggest and most fashionable city. Don't do those places on day trips from Brussels! Brussels is much more expensive, boring, ugly, dirty, and dangerous to European standards. You'll spend less time in your hotel room if you spend your nights in Brugge, Antwerp and Gent. Oh, and I'm from Herentals, Belgium. |
