I'm transiting in Brussels, Belgium, for half a day. Where should I visit/go to? |
Travel Info My planned europe trip involves me transiting in Belgium for about half a day, arriving in Midi/Zuid at around early morning. Could somebody suggest some places nearby the area which I should visit? I don't really know much about Brussels, and do not know much about what I should do there. I'd appreciate your help, thanks! Travel Tips From Midi station, walk on Bd. Maurice Lemonnier and then Anspachlaan, around the Bourse metro station you will see the old stock market building. Spend around 20 minutes looking at the area. then head towards Grand Palace (you can follow Rue de la Bourse), while going there look down and you will see the ancient Brussels ruins (from the Roman times). Just before the palace you will see some chocolate shops. I would recommend Leonidas for good price/quality ratio. Spend around 60 minutes in the Grand Palace and sit in one of the cafes if you like. After that on one of the corners of the Grand Palace you will see a statue embedded into a wall where everyone is touching for luck. If you believe it touch and wish something nice, if not watch the people touch it and entertain yourself. If you walk along that street on your left you will see lace and gobelin shops. You can buy a present or a souvenir for yourself. If you continue you along the street, you will see Manneken Pis (a small boy's statue taking a pee). If you are lucky it will be special day and you will see Manneken Pis (or Petite Julien) dressing some clothes. There is a small sign infront of it explaining on which day what it dresses. Then take the street back to the Grand palace and take the street opposite side to the one with the statue. You will see Galeries Hubert. Enter and see the most expensive shops in the city. Don't go till the end of the gallery but turn left in the middle of the gallery and now you are in Rue de Bouchers. Walk along and have some lunch in one of the restaurants. ALWAYS bargain with the guy standing in front of the restaurants for a better deal before you even sit. Try fish or mussels and Belgian french fries. This is the country where french fries was invented. After lunch or dinner walk down the rue de bouchers and arrive to Anspachlaan and head back to the midi station. Hurry up! You will miss your train. Source(s): Me, I do this all the time to the people who come to Brussels for 1 day or less. Other Travel Tips Brussels is a huge city. In a half a day it would be best to spend your time walking around the historical downtown. The tourist office is located at Grand' Place-Grote Markt. Here you can pick up a walking tour. I did one of about 3 hours last spring. It leads you past some old churches, an original indoor mall - Galeries Saint Hubert, as well as through some outdoor market areas. Grand Place Grote Markt also has some historical buildings that you can tour. Definitely, try the chocolate and the waffles while you are visiting. http://wikitravel.org/en/brussels... |
