What is Belgium known for, besides beer and chocolate? |
Travel Info What is Belgium known for, besides beer and chocolate? Travel Tips belgium is small but there is plenty to discover. If you like history go to the medieval city of Bruges, it's real masterpiece, even better than brussels. If you like old castles the place is full of it. If you like kayaking go to the south in the Ardennes, and cruise down "la Semois" or "La Lesse". Some provinces are better than others, obviously. Gastronomically, belgium is more than sprouts, waffles, and chocolate. And mussels, ew. But we do have 400 types of beer so yeah i guess we are doing pretty good for that. What else...mmm... well, just try it out. I live in Australia and all the aussies i've met who've been there had a great time. The train system is excellent, you can get pretty much everywhere by train or buses. We also have a few good old caves. The country is quite flat so no mountaineering i'm afraid (maybe after sampling a few beer you'll feel like you are on top of one!!!). Others Lace, Belgium endive, and brussel sprouts. Waffles The country is famous for its mussels and frites (French-fried potatoes), waffles, and endive. Fine chocolates are a passion and exquisite chocolatiers dot the marketplace of every city. More beer is consumed than wine by the populace. Many beers are crafted by small artisanal brewers whose family recipes and techniques go back generations. Beer laces the national dish, carbonnades flamandes, a Flemish beef stew. Brussels, Belgium is basically the "Capital" of the EU. There are already two excellent answers, so I'll just have to add: Fashion (Antwerp is one of the fashion capitals in europe). And Students (Leuven and Ghent are very nice student cities). And many different nationalities and also many multi-languaged citizens (all belgians I know speak about four different languages). And unfortunately also a big number of right wing oriented citizens. And of course the existence of the two different speaking, rivalring parts of the country - Flandria (north, the more beautiful and economically wealthy part) and Wallony (the part with more mountains and forests but also the ex industrial part with a high unemployment rate)! And of course a great Independent Pop music scene especially in Antwerp (thinking about dEUS, K's Choice, Soulwax, Zita Swoon, Front 242, etc.) Been there often. |
