In the Flemish speaking areas of Belgium, how widely spoken is English? French? |
Travel Info In other words, how easy would it be for an American tourist speaking only English and French to get around the Flemish speaking areas of Belgium (esp. Brugge, Antwerp)? Travel Tips Speaking English in the Flemish area of Belgium shouldn't be a problem. I find it much harder to find someone who's willing to speak English in France than in Belgium. Source(s): I live close to Belgium Other Travel Tips In my experience traveling in Belgium, many speak English and most speak French. Flemish is still spoken by many but if you have a good understanding of French, you should have no problem at all. You'll be fine. Very easy, we have a lot of English speaking tourism no problem. I live in Flanders and almost everyone under that age of 40 speaks English. The older folks less so. Their English is much better than their French. You won't have any problems "maat". As a tourist, you won't have any problems (esp. in the touristic cities like Brugge). People speak basic English and French in Flanders. Some have strong accent, but I don't think it will bother you. But be careful - if you go shopping, the packages of products are mostly written only in Flemish or French. |
