Travel Info
i am staying at mechelen, belgium.i want to learn french here but i have been told i can do so only after i hav learnt dutch.i am not so keen on learning dutch or 2 languages so soon after each other.is this information correct? is there any other way by which i can learn french?
i dont know much about on-line courses and considerably distrust them, so would very much prefer actual classroom for learning.

Hi Victoria, you can learn french in Belgium without having to know any dutch - the answer they gave you is total rubbish. You are in the Flemish area and there they speak flemish which has french and dutch semantics and grammar.

That does not mean you need to learn Flemish they just wanted to enroll you and told you that. You can find in Mechelen many places to learn french in English, or French etc too for example below is one of many centers in Mechelen:

Berlitz Mechelen Language Center
Mechelen
2800
Kleine Nieuwendijkstraat 53
Tel.: +32 (0)15 34 94 01
Fax: +32 (0)15 21 90 33

You can see online their courses and curriculum for adults :

But the classes are not necessarily online there is the above center in Mechelen as well as many more.

the Belgium speak 2 languages depending of the area you go.1 is Flemish which has a strong dutch influence and the other 1 near Brussels where they speak french so heck it out, where you go.
forget french
learn dutch for better jobs better status in the community
this is your turkish buddy who advices
Then why don't you start with learning Dutch? Since you are staying in Mechelen, it would be more use full because the people steak Dutch...
I found you a link you can take a look at, but if I was you I'd would go to the VDAB and ask them about where there are courses and what the requirements are. I'm sure they will be able to help you!

We have here 3 languages: Flemish, French and German.
Yes you can learn French without any Flemish(Dutch) best look for that in Brussels(near by Mechelen).
Keep in mind that French is very difficult for sure for English speakers, good luck.
I'm from Belgium and glad I can help.
