Short break this summer in Belgium - any advice where to go? |
Travel Info I've heard Brugge is nice but can anyone recommend other places too for a long weekend? Thanks! Travel Tips If you can get to Ypres. This astonishing town was levelled during WW1 but Germany was made to rebuild it as it was, and the famous medieval Cloth Hall (now one of the most moving museum's in the world) looks as if it's been there for centuries. The shops and cafes are really good and each evening, as they have since the signing of the armistice, the fire-brigade play last post at the Menim gate, whose arches contain the names of thousands of the lost generation. The whole place comes to a standstill as traffic stops and the gathered contemplate the futility of war. May favourite European city after my own. It's ageless, timeless - an astonishing and awe inspiring place that fills you wit the Joy of being alive. Good wishes. Others I like Belgium and I have visited quite a few times. I have been to Ostend a couple of times and have found it quite nice. If you drink there are plenty of bars, and it has a good selection of hotels and some great little eateries. The same goes for Brussels, but I found it a bit more expensive -like all capital cities- but you can easily reach other places from here. Have a nice time wherever you go. http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/tourism-g18... http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/tourism-g18... Antwerpe is a great place to visit, with Gent just up the road for an day/afternoon it's ideal if you like museums, horse and cart tours etc. Lovely shops, markets and cafes. I don't think you can really go wrong anywhere in Belgium though to be honest. Enjoy :) Belgium is a much underrated place. Loads to do and see and a long history of culture etc. They also do some remarkably good beers! (Oh, and chocolate) Ghent is good Antwerp awesome Brussels brilliant. It's up to you really.. Have a good time. go and see the seaside if you like water or go to the 'Ardennes' in the south if you prefer walking in the forests. If you prefer city trips, just go and visit Tournai, Bruges or Gand which are 3 great cities ... |
