Belgian lion question? |
Travel Info Oost Vlaanderen to be specific. My mother is Belgian and she said that her mother told her that the lion had to have certain characteristics or it was "anti-Belgian" or used by extreme pressure groups. Not sure what she means, but it's something about the tongue and claws. Any info would be appreciated. Travel Tips The "leeuw van Vlanderen" is indeed often (but not only) associated with anti Belgium movements, extreme right-wing and other people that struggle for the end of the Kingdom. One other example is also during international sports events, like the Tour de France, where you can almost everytime see the Flemish flag waving to support their regional sportsmen, substituting the national flag. Regarding the symbol of the lion itself, refer to previous answer. 1302 is the Flemish historical reference used for claiming their roots, independently of the rest of Belgium. You may have a good political example of the unfortunate secessionist trend in the north of the country looking at the success of fascist party "Vlaams Belang". Other Travel Tips " De Leeuw van Vlaanderen" = The Flander麓s Lion De Tong = the tongue De Klauwen = the claws This is a very long story that you need to know before you can even start to understand what is behind it! This startet in the years 1302, " Schild & Vriend", the flemish people against the French army.. ask your mother she will know about it. If not try to find a book at the library with the history of Belgium. I hope this helps you a bit. Gilbert |
