Why Belgians don't like the Dutch and vice versa? Or is it true? |
Travel Info Its not really that dramatic but I feel there are some hidden feelings here. Usually these are expressed as jokes of one over the other e.t.c. Travel Tips With a Belgian father and a Dutch mother and the family split in half my whole life has been about (subtle) dutch-belgian wars. It's more a love-hate affair then anything else. We are so similar that those differences there are, are easily spotted. You can forgive an Italian to be different, it's another culture, but Belgians and Dutch are constantly correcting each other : you have to say this that way, you have to put road directions the way we do, you have to speak the way we do... Result of a history that was often a shared one and often seperate again. Sort of like you have camels with one hump and camels with two - they must find the other soooo funny. Others Historically, Belgium got its independance after fighting with the Dutch. Apart from that, Belgian are Catholic and Dutch Protestant. However, these days, only football can let that antagonism come to the surface because the relations between these two countries are quite good. Some old joke are remaining about the fact that the Dutch are very avaricious. One that point, as a Belgian, I confirm it is true! Not not completely true, there are jokes yes but we don't hate our good neighbor Holland. In fact here in Antwerp the most of the business on weekend is based on tourism from Holland, so if you go to" the Vogeltjes markt" on Sunday you will hear a lot of clear Dutch. The Dutch are good for Belgium and the economics here. I'm living here in Antwerp Belgium. the dutch and belgian are good friends, and off course here in holland there are some wise-guys who think they are better then the belgians end thats the same in belgium, and whats also not treu that the dutch are protestants, the most are catholic. from holland :) You will find the same in Canada, France, Spain, etc., |
