What is ilhabela like? |
Travel Info What is ilhabela like? Travel Tips I spend a weekend in Ilhabela in April and had a wonderful time with my cousins who live in Sao Paulo. It's a popular weekend getaway for (dare I say wealthy?) people from Sao Paulo. The only way you can get there is by ferry and as a result it's pretty free of the criminal elements of Sao Paulo. There is a small town at the north of the Island with a cathedral, shops, restaurants, bookstore and cafe. The weekend we were there (Easter weekend) there was alot of activity on the streets including Semana Santa parades and Capoeira exhibitions (Afro-Brazilian martial art). There are some nice beaches for swimming and body surfing and people watching. Also, there are lots of opportunities to hike through the rainforests of the interior of the island. We actually hired a jeep and driver and he took us a to a beautiful waterfall with a swimming hole. We had a wonderful lunch at a restaurant called New York (great seafood!) Highly recommended! We went on probably one of the busiest weekends of the year (of of the last weekends of summer) and it still wasn't that crowded. WARNING: Bring *lots* of mosquito repellant. The mosquitoes are really really nasty and they will get you if you're not careful. I really wish I had brought a mosquito net to sleep in at night! |
