As an American, you're not allowed to work in Germany unless you have a work-permit. But that's the small problem - there's lots of unemployment in Berlin, and if you don't know German or the rules of the market in Germany, it's going to be difficult. Most foreigners with little knowledge of German have to work as English teachers (privately) or clean houses.

You can search for jobs on Monster; craigslist (both have a Berlin section); and on the German language Zitty (when you're already in Berlin) - they have many jobs listed for foreigners or students.
