Travel Info Going on a cruise to St. George, Bermuda. What are the chances of renting a car or moped to get around island? Travel Tips Car: ZERO percent. There are no rental cars on the island. The only thing that you can rent is a moped or scooter. Honestly, the best way to get around the island is by bus. They have incredibly effecient and clean public transportation. I have been to BDA 9 times, and I can tell you that it is THE way to get around the island. Drivers are friendly, and you just tell them where you want to go, and they will tell you when you get to your stop. The schedule and map is very easy to read. Also, bus passes are good for ferry service around the island - a very fun way to get around. Mopeds might get you to the secluded areas, but they are dangerous, especially during cruise ship season, as the island is so overcrowded. Also, If you are used to driving on the right side of the road, it is difficult to get used to driving on the left. Most moped accidents involve tourists. I have seen one couple injured so badly that their family had to fly in from the states just to get them on the plane. I rented a moped once, but it was in January, when there were no tourists on the island. It was fun, but it was also scary. I highly recommend you do not do it, but if you do, be careful. Wheels Cycles and Oleander Cycles are less than a 2 minute walk from where your ship will dock. Another option is to get a guided taxi tour. When you get off of the ship, there will be taxis lined up for you in the town square. Make sure the driver is a certified guide, though. Have a wonderful time!! Others Car = 82% chance. Moped = 46.5% chance. I'm pretty sure that rental cars are restricted in Bermuda and residents are only allowed one car. I think that your best bet would to go with the mopeds. http://www.bermuda.com/wheels/about.html... Very easy to get a moped- probably will have place right by the cruise ship. You can rent mopeds but you should skip that unless you have experience driving on the wrong/left side of the street. You may be fine on straight aways but turns and circles can get you in trouble if you are not used to that type driving. I lieu of a scooter, just buy a transportation pass for the length of time you will be there. It will allow you to use the buses and ferry all day every day. The big bus station is about a block from the pier in HAmilton and the Ferry dock to take you to King's Dockyard is there also. You can get a bus from St George to anywhere on the island and the buses run regularly and can take you to the beaches as well. Be sure to go to Elbow and/or Long Bay Beach. If you want to snorkel go to Tobacco Bay beach which is walking distance, about 3/4 mile from St George dock. There are also other beaches near St George that you can walk to. Been there No chance for a car...Mopeds are all over. Take care, though. Driving is on the left; it takes awhile to get used to that. It is a fun place, though. |
