I thought Scotch Corner was on the North Yorkshire/County Durham border on the A1

Scotch Corner is nowhere near Birmingham.
Its on the A1 near Darlington in North Yorkshire, must be nearly 200 miles from Birmingham
because it is where ancient britions traded with the celts
To be fair, it IS north of Birmingham ...

Evidently, the name originates from it being the junction where the road to eastern Scotland separates from the road to western Scotland.
Scotch corner is a place up the A1 near Darlington.
