I have heard about a find of Amethyst in Western Maine. Where can I go to find my own safely and legally? |
Travel Info All I know is that a large haul of Amethysts were found in Western Maine. I want to know where can I go to find my own without getting shot or arrested Travel Tips Where in Western Maine? Western Maine near the New Hampshire border or Northwestern Maine near the Canadian border? If its Northwestern Maine near the Canadian border, I spent a week this past fall in that area. Those lands are mostly all owned by logging companies. They are open to the public via the Golden Road and other logging roads (you just have to pay a Gate Fee). But, you are definitely not welcome to remove things like minerals. Looking here in the ninth edition of "Maine, an Explorer's Guide", it says: Perham's Maine Mineral Store at Trap Corner in West Paris, which claims to attract an annual 90,000 visitors, displays Maine minerals and offers access to its four quarries. The store also offers information about other quarries and sells its own guidebooks to gem hunting in Oxford County and throughout the state. For other rockhounding meccas, check the "Bethel" chapter. Thanks to the high price of gold, prospectors are back-panning Maine streambeds; a list of likely spots is available from the Maine Geological Survey (287-2801), Department of Conservation, State House Station 22, Augusta, ME 04333." Ok, also listed in the book is "Rochester's Eclectic Emporium (539-4631), Route 26, Oxford. Nick Rochester displays a 54 carat amethyst that he found locally and steers visitors to local mines. " Looking at a map of Maine, I can see that Oxford is a few miles west of Mechanic Falls, which is itself just a few miles west of the larger towns of Auburn and Lewiston.
