Thinking about moving to Quincy, MA?

Travel Info
Will be relocating to the Boston area next month for a new job in the Fens/Back Bay area, but the apt. prices seem a bit steep. I've looking a little into Quincy and it seems like a nice area. Would it be a doable commute for work via the T? Any suggestions on apt. communities/complexes/building... to check out? Any other tidbits about Quincy I should know?

Travel Tips
The main thing to consider is that there are 2 main areas to Quincy, Marina Bay, which is the trendy waterfront area, and the rest of it, which is, to generalize, a more ethnically mixed and more blue collar area. There are some nicer parts and not as nice parts within that.

If you can afford the Marina Bay section (and it ranges from top dollar to some more affordable but still higher end pricing), it is a fun sort of yuppish area. There are restaurants and clubs contained within and a pretty scenic area to walk. Many local pro atheles used to live there, with our QB Tom Brady being the biggest name, but many moved out after word got out. Truthfully I was a little sorry I didn't buy in there when I moved out of Boston (it was right before prices went sky high). Ironically my "burb" is now considered a better investment, but I think that would have been more fun lol. I know it has a web site so you might want to read about it and see if it sounds like something you would like or not. Here are a couple (remember this is a tourist/promo site so it's a bit overly glowing IMHO lol) http://www.discoverquincy.com/marinabay.... or

Problem is depending where you are in Quincy it is either VERY convenient to transportation and major roads, OR a confusing mess. Wish I knew the name of the section, but I have never once made it around that part of town without driving in circles and cursing big time! VERY frustrating as you can imagine (and I both read directions and ask for help lol).

Now not sure where you are moving from, but keep in mind that most apartment prices in this area are steep. Only you know what is affordable to you. When you get aquainted with the area you might want to consider buying something. I rented for years and can just shoot myself at how much money I threw away vs putting into an investment.

My suggestion would be to ask how close the T is to any apt complex you look at . But for example I know there is one in town that boasts of having a T stop in it. Sounds great, but it's not in a great area and I personally don't care for it there.

Ironically I'll be in Quincy tomorrow (I go to a spiritual church there). I could see if anyone has any specific recommendations. My biggest suggestion is to come tour the area, since what look awesome on a brochure might not look as good when you walk out the entrance and find a run down area.

I think you have the right idea though. I'd choose Quincy over living in the Fenway area! If you want to give more of an idea of what type of community you are looking for, I might have a better idea what to suggest. And FYI, one of my best friends used to have a condo in Weymouth. Yes there are many complexes there (both to rent and buy) but keep in mind that you then have to drive to the Quincy Adams garage if you want to take the T, or you have to take commuter rail. And even though that is still part of the T, it is higher priced and runs less often. I don't know if that matters to you or not, but wanted you to understand the difference if you are new to the area.

Quincy is an easy commute by the "T" to Boston. You might want to consider Braintree and Weymouth. Weymouth has some nice affordable apartment complexes. Sorry, I don't know the complex names but they are very near Route 3 and lots of restaurants and shopping.
Good luck - I live south of there and it's a great area.
Quincy is one of the easiest commutes to and from Boston, and you're correct you would save money. Generally Quincy is a nice place to be, especially around the Marina Bay area. There are other places as well you could check out to save money, but Quincy is directly on the Red Line, so I would save go for it. My friend has an apartment in Marina Bay, and she loves it. It's really nice, and she walks her dog along the water and really enjoys it.
isnt there an amusemtn park there?
I dont know if you're completely tied to a complex, but Quincy offers quite a bit of rentals from homes. I lived in Quincy for 10 years, and found that it was cheaper (and a more personal option) for me to rent part of a multi family home.

Quincy has 4 stops along the red line, and most are very close to Hancock St, which is it's main street. If you can find housing close to Hancock St, you'd most likely be pretty close to one of the stops. There are also a number of buses that would bring you to the train station.

You would be transferring from the Red line to the Green line at Park St to get to the Fens area. It'd be about 45 min- 50 min commute by train.
Good choice. Nice area, and close to the T.
