Is it worth xtra$ to stay downtown Boston? I would like to stay below $250/night. Going beginning of August? |
Travel Info We are landing at PSM should we rent car or take bus. Is there a nice scenic ocean view drive to Boston from PSM? Also if we rent car should we stay out of Downtown and T into the city or just park the car and walk if we stay downtown. Any travel advise is appreciated. Also traveling with 4&6 year old. Suggestions please! Travel Tips 1) Stay out of town unless parking is included in your hotel. Depending on whether money is an issue, you can consider the Best Western in Quincy. Super cheap, and it's right on the Red line, 15-20 minutes to downtown and no driving required. 2) Not sure where PSM is, but the scenic ocean views are best in Beverly and Gloucester for the north shore, the Jamestown/Newport are for southern Mass. Definitely take the kids to the aquarium downtown. My nieces love it. Also, they'll LOVE the whale watch tours. For around $20 per person you are out in the Bay (especially nice during august). also try the harbor Islands. The islands are a MUST in august, you have the best views of boston and the harbor, plus it is about 10 degrees cooler out on the ocean (visit boston harbor tours at www.massbaylines.com). happy visiting! Others Your question would be easier to answer if you informed what PSM is. It that Portland or Portsmouth? If you do decide to stay in downtown Boston Portland also has connections to the Amtrak station (4 trains a day from Portland to Boston). If you are going to rent a car I certainly would advise that you stay outside of the city and T it. The seacoast drive from Newburyport to Salem is quite scenic and goes through many historic and lovely cities, towns and villages. That from South Portland to Kittery is nice but somewhat less impressive. Have you thought if you stay in the city to rent a car just for the drive to Boston, leave it at a rental location there, paying any drop-off charges (there may be none) and T-ing and walking during your stay? I can't answer your question about a scenic drive, but... If you want a room in the city at that rate in August, I'd definitely start looking now. It's a busy time of year and hotel rates are up, since it's peak travel season. Keep in mind that you will probably pay for parking if you stay in the city... I work in the Back Bay area and most of the parking garages I know of nearby are $30-40 per day, not included in your room rate. For that rate, it might be better to stay slightly out of the city and T it (and your room will be cheaper as well). Some of the hotels I know of in the surrounding areas are $8-10/day for parking. Just make sure there's easy access to the T, or what you're saving on parking will be spent on a taxi! You certainly don't need a car to get around Boston, and I personally don't recommend driving if you're not familiar with the city. Many people get lost easily in Boston, and parking is limited and expensive. Plus, the kiddos will probably like taking the subway! It all depends on how important time is to you really. Because if you stay outside of the city, the T is easy to access, but it will take additional time getting to and from your hotel every night. With children, and crowds of people this may be inconvienent for you, where as downtown would just be easier to step outside of your hotel room and be at many of the attractions. That is really the only difference. You would save lots of money, so weigh those two factors and see what you think would work bset for you. But if you're going to rent a car anyhow, I wouldn't drive into the city every day, if you stay at a hotel just leave the car there and walk or even just take the T a few stops here and there. If you can afford a room for $200 a night, then you should be staying at the best hotel Boston has to offer. I should think hotels will cost about an average of $150 a night. There are plenty of good hotels Fairmont Copley Plaza, Marriot Copley Place, The Westin Hotel, Sheraton Hotel are few good ones. LIKE I SAID, IF YOU CAN AFFORD 250/NIGHT, STAY DOWNTOWN. YOU WILL ENJOY BOSTON MORE. |
