Travel Info
for a romantic get away in New England area?? Mid - May .. not to expensive??

Travel Tips
Hi....I'd be glad to try to help but I'd do a much better job if you could answer a few questions. Do you have a preference sea or mountains, or not care? (My biggest worry about going up North is it's still pretty cold in May. I used to go to NH ever summer holday weekend and Memorial day at the end of May was always freezing at night and varied during the day).

Also what do you consider not expensive. That varies so...so it would be helpful to know your cap. My first thought is down the Cape. It will be preseason rates and even though it will likely be too cool for lay out beach days, it should be lovely for walks at the beach, boat trips and outdoor activities. But not sure what you have in mind. And any type activities you like doing or you just looking for a kewl place to escape to for a few?

I'll check back! Ok back but I just gotta start with another question lol. You said romantic. I hope the person you are taking shares the same view of romantic as you do, because while hiking, canoeing etc are fun, if a guy took me to do that on a "romantic getaway" he'd be signed up on Match the next week looking for someone else unless we had planned it together and I had lost my mind/agreed or I was hopelessly in love. LOLOL. Seriously though, please make sure your partner shares your romatic view cause I think you may be on dangerous turf.

So that said, you might want to look in the North Conway area. There are some very nice bed & breakfasts or small inns and I know there are day trips you can arrange to canoe the Saco River. I'm just not sure they run them this early. But that is a very pretty and easy river to canoe. There are a few rough patches that aren't bad, but enough to keep a change of clothes in a zip lock & you sneakers tied on, as I learned one trip hehe. Peaches remains a great breakfast spot. I would have to look up what else is still there, as I used to go all the time, but haven't in too many years.

Ok had a brainstorm as I was typing below. One of my fav places to go hiking was the hidden waterfall in Jackson, NH. Then I remember there is a great B&B and hotel there. It's a little bit past the N. Conway traffic and outlets, but a short enough drive it's there if you want to go. You can check it out at http://www.jacksonnh.com/. The places to stay I recall being nice are The Nestle Nook Inn, and if you want larger The Eagle Mountain House. But check that site it shows all the options, including a few sister places to the Nestle Nook. One of those is Nordic Village, which has it's pro's and cons (modern condo feel not so great, fireplaces, jacuzzi, prices usually very good lol). If you go there find a local and ask how to find that hidden waterfall. No way to give driving directions...but it's up to the right, behind the Eagle Mountain House and one of the prettiest and easist hikes. There's also a spot along the Saco where there is a natural whirlpool, but it will be WAY too cold in May. It's still freezing in Aug lol...but then you are hot so it feels good. And the Wildcat Inn is great, esp at night in the Tavern!!

Another thought would be on the other side of the Kangamangous (spell probably wrong, sorry too lazy to look up lol). Merideth, NH is right on Lake Winnipesaukee. It's a pretty little town that is far less touristy. Same thing with pretty places and there are some great restaurants. One is in the old Mill building which is a charming place to poke around...filled with cute stores, and that restaurant, and a few cafe's. There's great hiking, well in both.

Now either part, or whatever state, you might want to poke around these sites. It's where you rent vacation homes/condo's, often from owners. You can find some cheaper prices and lovely places, if you don't go the B&B or, shudder, camping route lol. And you can change the state if you want to check out Vt or Maine.

and in case you change your mind about the Cape (which I think will be MUCH warmer mid-May)

So those are my thoughts...hoped it helped. It will likely be very cold there esp at night (if you are not familiar w/it), so bring lots of layers and a good jacket. It's also still "mud season" then, I'd think especially so with the late snow we had. So I'd check and see how messy the hiking might be anywhere up North. Least you could still enjoy the fireplaces and jacuzzi's lol. Have fun whatever you decide!

Cape Anne in Mass. Its kind of like a mini cape cod. Much less crowded and more "small townish". Its near Gloucester (sp?). Beach might be a little cold in May, but it will be anywhere in New England.

Another suggestion if you want to do something like that. I went canoeing down the Connecticut River on the New Hampshire / Vermont boarder. The planned trip was for about 30 miles and was for 3 days and 2 nights camping. (we were lazy and did about 15 miles). We were pretty much alone on the river. Camped wherever we wanted when we got tired. We rented canoes from a company that I dont remember the name of. They drove us right to the drop off point and picked us up when we finally gave up. Check out the many lovely country rurual inns in southwestern New Hampshire extending into north central Massachusetts.
Many with great restaurants. Lots of classic New England forests and countryside and villages and towns, and hiking trails. Spring may still be blooming in mid-May.
