Salem has great history!
Its were people in the 17th century they were accused of witches

SALEM IS AWSOM!
hey there, there are many great places in Salem, it is an excellent little city with many great shops, and restaurants..particularly by the waterfront.
October is the best time of year to be in Salem. Home of the witch trials, Salem goes a bit overboard around Halloween. it can get a bit touristy that time of year, but it's always so much fun!!

This is the site for the Witch Trials homepage and they post the specific events.

Salem is a really good place to visit, but be warned: it sucks in October. Not to rain on your parade but I lived there for five years because I went to school at the state college. Everyone got headaches just thinking of the October month because of Halloween season. Tourists come in droves and the place is mobbed. Traffic-wise, it's terrible. The police are hawks with parking tickets and the second your meter expires, they'll ticket you in an instant. The area's also a clusterf*ck in general when driving through a lot of one way streets and it's murder during Halloween season. However, if you're coming when it's not on Halloween night, then you picked a fairly good time since there's a lot to do. There are a lot of tours both day and night being lead around the Salem Commons, there's the historical Peabody Essex Museum which is a treat for anyone who likes to go to a good museum.

The Salem Witch Museum sucks. I'll be blunt. It does blow. Unfortunately it's a tourist trap meant to sell cheap souvenirs and a lot of candy that made me fell gypped. The area is really concentrated around the Salem Commons because there are a lot of Mom and Pop shops concentrated around the area, in addition to a few bars and restaurants you can find. There's also a movie theater you can go to. If you go beyond the Salem Commons, generally you won't find much except what you find in every other suburban city.

Pickering Wharf is another place I highly recommend, and it's just a short distance from Salem Commons. It's right by the water, and there's a bevy of good restaurants and a couple unique stores located next to it. Another great site is the Salem Willows, a small park also by the water (not far away from Pickering Wharf) which might be a bit of a walk unless you drive. It should be open in October and it's this place full of arcade machines, eateries ranging in pizza to Chinese to gourmet popcorn and a lot of views. It's a good guilty pleasure.

If you're into the bar scene, a couple places I'd recommend might be O'Neil's. However, if you're turned off to big crowds, tight spaces, shoulder to shoulder human traffic and dark lighting, it might not be your scene. The place is crawling with students from Salem State (I went there a few times). Rockafella's is also pretty good and it caters to people besides the college crowd.

As for places to stay, I would recommend the Hawthorne Hotel if you want to treat yourself. It's fairly nice but it's a little expensive and bookings have to be early. However, Salem is in the north shore and there are a lot of B&B's to go to. I don't find Salem to be a particularly good host though if you want to find like a Best Western or a Holiday Inn. You would have to stay outside Salem if you want to save money. Salem retains it's independence in that sense. Not to trail off, a place I found particularly good was the Marblehead Inn, which is down the street from the state college in Marblehead, which is a pretty ritzy community. It's got a lot of your basic amenities.

Mystery Train is used and new CD store that looks like the sister of John Cusack's store in High Fidelity and it's got a lot to offer a broad range of music. However, adjacent to this store is an area I don't find particularly desirable so I'd watch out. It's kind of a slum area which you'll be aware soon when you step foot into it.

Salem also has a few major chain grocery stores like Shaw's and Market Basket, in addition to Target and Walmart in the area, and they're all concentrated on Highland Ave. (which also has a hospital). Plus Salem is near a few other cities like Peabody and Beverly, which have a lot to offer like the North Shore shopping mall (in Peabody). Danver, an adjacent town also has a shopping mall with a giant movie theater.

All in all, Salem's an appropriate choice for the weekend and not a week long stay.
Going to school there
