Why are there always flags of foreign nations flying over Boston's City Hall Plaza? |
Travel Info I've noticed this for at least the last five years. There are three flagpoles in City Hall Plaza in Boston. The U.S. flag and Massachusetts state flag are always displayed on the first two flagpoles, but every day the third flagpole changes, and it's always a different foreign country. So far I've seen the flags of Lithuania, Norway, and New Zealand. Yesterday for example, they had the flag of Haiti. It is technically legal for the city to do this (as long as the American flag is flown higher than the other flags). It's just a little odd, in my view, to fly the banners of foreign nations with no apparent significance or relevance. Travel Tips I never noticed that but now that you mention it, that's pretty weird.I would say it's odd, and why would Haiti have relevance? Send an email to City Hall and see what they say. Others Maybe that is how Boston honors its citizens who hail from other countries. Also, perhaps Boston has sister cities with the countries displayed on the flag poles. Their guest for the day most likely are from the country that flag has been raised to. Hotels have chains as well in other countries and connections from other countries. As long as the United States Flag is higher than all the rest they can fly as many as they want to. If you ever look at the foreign embassy you'll see all the different countries flags flying. Its a "respect" thing. Like KF said......It's a RESPECT thing, It is a significant thing, It makes the foreign guest feel welcome. |
