Transportation in Boston? |
Travel Info My friend and I want to make a trip to Boston this summer and my boyfriend is the only one old enough to rent a car, but we want to have a guy free trip, so what kind of transportation is available in Boston? Is there a public bus system and taxis? I know there's a metro-type system, but is there anything else, that wouldn't confuse us? Travel Tips I live in Boston, and I can assure you that you're better off without a car. The driving isn't much fun unless you're used to it, and parking is incredibly expensive. You could take taxis, but you're honestly probably better taking the subway, called the T by locals. It's really not that difficult to navigate, and it's much much cheaper ($2/ride, $9/day, or a week-long pass for $15). And I can tell you, if you're on it and you're unsure where you're going, if you ask someone will help you. We're not snobby people. I'd recommend a visit to www.mbta.com. This is their website (actually, the website for all public transportation). You can see the stops and how you get from one line to another. In addition, many of the "tourist"-y type stops (i.e. the Aquarium) have web pages with directions, often including which subway stop you'd need. And if you're staying at a hotel, ask the desk clerk or concierge! It's their job to know this. Others Boston is a really difficult city to navigate when driving. Take the T everywhere. It's fast and easy. I don't live there, but have visited several times and agree with merrybod...take the T or a taxi. It's not worth the hassle to drive and park. The metro system is in fact very easy to understand (far less confusing than the busses). Also easy to comprehend is the extensive local commuter railroad system. The commuter trains, the metro and the busses are all part of the public transportaion system known as "The T". First of all...the last thing you should have in Boston is a car. Parking is a zillion dollars a day and the traffic is horrible. The subway...taxis....walking.... Excellent transportation everywhere. Will save time and money in the end. |
