Which is a good neighborhood to live in for an MIT student? |
Travel Info I'm hoping to find a 2 bedroom for about 1600. I know Cambridge, especially Central Square is supposed to be the best option. Are any other neighborhoods a good deal? I heard Allston and other parts of Boston are good, but that it takes forever to get to campus by public transit. Travel Tips I would look into the Davis Square area in Somerville, or around Porter Square on the Somerville/Cambridge line. They're both on the Red Line of the T (subway system), which MIT is on as well, and have tons of restaurants and bars and stores. The area around Harvard - also on the Red Line - is nice but probably more expensive. And the Allston/Brighton areas, where I live, are also really good areas but as you said not quite as easy to get to by public transit to MIT (although it's not impossible and certainly not as bad a commute as you could have). There are bus lines that go but it would take a while if you take the subway - you'd have to take the Green Line all the way downtown and then the Red Line back out to MIT. But I wouldn't rule out those areas either. Also you could check out the Fenway or Symphony neighborhoods as well, although they will probably be somewhat more expensive in terms of rent, the commute from those areas is really good - you can take the #1 bus up Mass. Ave. and it's a very short distance from there actually. Others Unless you have a bike, you probably don't want to live in Allston or Brighton--they are across the river and in BU territory. Kendall Square is close and Central Square is also good, but probably more expensive. Try out by Somerville for something cheaper but still off the Red Line, it may be far out, but at least on the same T line and a cool area. Self (I went to BU.) Best place to live is Kendall Square or Central Square, with Kendall Square being closer to the campus. If you cross the Mass Ave Bridge, Kenmore & Fenway aren't that bad, but if you plan on taking the T for transportation then your commute could be a little long with the red line/green line transfer. My best friend went to MIT and she lives in the area of the CambridgeSide Galleria, the Lechmere area. Now that said your best bet is to stay on the Cambridge Side of the Red Line so look into Porter Square (a little far out from the city), Davis Square, Harvard Square, Central Square, Kendall Square, and near Mass General Hospital (the Charles MGH stop). Hope that helps! |
