I want to go to Boston Univesirty...but I have some questions....? |
Travel Info I recently visited BU and I really like how the campus was layed out on the road and river. But I have some questions: (I posted this under education but like no one answered so I'm posting again, please reply!) 1. I'm from Minnesota and when I was there most of the people I talked to were from the east coast. Will I be welcomed?(By the way I'm a never changing gopher hockey fan...hahah :) not a Boston hockey fan) 2. How long did it take you to make friends? 3. Was it really safe? 4. How often do you go Downtown, and how are the dorms, I saw some but i know there all different. Okay thanks guys if I think of any more questions i'll add 'em. Travel Tips I go to BU and off the top of my head can think of 4 kids I know from Minnesota. There are people from all over, so don't worry about that at all. Also, hockey is DEFINITELY our number one sport, so you gotta cheer on the Terriers! But don't worry, we're Hockey East and never play the Gophers, so there's no conflict of interest. You'll have fun in the Dogpound (the crazy, all-knowing hockey fans), I promise. BU also has a ton of social activities to join. The profs. help freshman by having everyone introduce themselves in class and setting up group projects, so you can get to know kids from your classes. Dorms (I'll go into this later) are also a great and easy way to meet people. Everyone is pretty open to it so it's not a problem. It's quite safe on campus. All BU police officers are trained with the Boston PD, so they know what they are doing. The dorms have a strict guest policy and are among the safest in the nation. Allston, where a lot of big parties go on past west campus, is kind of sketchy, but other wise you'll be fine. It's easy to get downtown -- I go all the time. To the Commons, it's about a 20 minute walk. You can also take the T, the green line goes straight downtown. Some students don't go into the city at all, others (such as myself) prefer to hang out there instead of on-campus. You can find both extremes and everyone inbetween easily. The dorms...well...freshman dorms are cramped. Won't lie to ya there. Warren Towers houses 1800 students, and is right on Comm Ave. I do NOT recommend Warren at all. It's just too many people. The Towers, on Bay State Rd, is right behind the school of Management and also where you would have seen a room on the tour. I lived there freshman year and made a ton of friends. It's only got about 840 students, which is still plenty enough to find awesome friends, but not so much that theres no where to sit in the dining hall, like in Warren. Also, many of the upper floors get views of the river, which rocks. West Campus is composed of 3 halls, with about 600 students in each. Opposed to Warren each hall has a seperate security check in. They probably have the best food, but it's a much longer way to class (unless you are in CGS or CFA). It's on the Allston border, so close to parties on the weekend. Myles Standish Hall and Shelton Hall are nicer --they use to be hotels. However, a lot of upper classmen live in both and it's not nearly as easy to make friends, although still possible. South Campus and Bay State Rd are brownstones, either dorm style (with no dining hall) or apartment. Don't live there as a freshman, you'll be lonely. Danielson Hall is about a 12 minute walk to CAS, on Beacon Street. It's also much closer to the city. Some people like it, some hate it. The rooms are bigger, but it also tends to be upperclassmen. If you have any more specific questions about BU, I'd be happy to help, just email me! Others Hey, a Gopher coming to BU...that's a first. I went to BU. Answers to your questions: 1) You're right, a lot of BU students are from NY/NJ area. But I met a lot of people from all over...including plenty of people from California. BU is the most diverse school in the country and there are plenty of people from all 50 states and different countries around the world. 2) It didn't take me that long. I'm not originally from this country so people from my country tend to click together...same as other people from the same area. But I noticed that frehmen that stayed in the big dorms (Warren Towers, West Campus tend to make friends faster and also tend to have plenty of friends than others that stay in the smaller dorms...which I prefer) 3) Yes, Boston is a very safe city, and the campus is very safe. Just be very alert crossing Commonwealth Avenue when being in a hurry to class. There have been quite a few...some fatal accidents with students crossing the street with bikes...sometimes hit and run. 4) I use to go Downtown maybe...one weekend a month. Only when I wanted to shop for clothes or something. 4b)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/boston_univ... I have answered quite a few questions on Boston University on this site. Just enter "Boston University" in the "Search for questions" tab on top of the screen. I'm sure you will find a lot of helpful answers. Also, feel free to email me...just don't expect an answer too quickly...I'm quite busy lately. You are welcome. I came to Boston right after I graduated college 4 years ago and have lived right around the BU campus for most of that time. (I also took a couple of classes at BU). Anyway it's a really good school! 1. Yes... you'll be welcomed people will love you! BU has people from all over - yes mostly from the east coast but you'll make friends. 2. It seems like it's a very close-knit school. I went to UMass-Amherst and made lots of friends there even though I came from out of state, and I think that BU is very friendly too. And since I've moved to Boston I've made even more friends. 3. Yes it's a very safe part of the city. Certainly along Commonwealth Ave. - the main street that goes through BU - it's safe, and even the side streets going through the neighborhood are safe. Granted, I'm a large male, so I have no problems walking through these neighborhoods at night, but really it's a very safe area. 4. I've only visited the BU dorms a couple times I have a friend who went there - his dorm was nice, haha. Overall they're supposed to all be nice. And the dining hall we went to was good! Ahh my beloved Alma matter! Truthfully you said you like the one area I would be concerned about...BU's campus--or lack thereof lol. If you are happy with that then you will love BU. It's a great place and one of the key things to remember is that Boston IS part of the BU campus really. Unlike a school that is set on many acres and far away from everything, Boston becomes part of your school experience, both socially and educationally. It's ironic you mention hockey...I'll explain on several areas. First when I went, a good pal of mine (who I met as she lived a in the dorm a few doors down from me) was from Minnesota and a female hockey player! She fit in great. But be warned...BU hockey has a way of getting in your blood while here!!!!! We do rock! Folks do tend to meet friends in the dorms, so the larger the dorm/complex, the more going on and the more you have to meet. I will give you a couple tips on this. I read the pr trash they sent out and listed Warren Towers (700) as my first choice. Luckily fate put me in West Campus. I would HIGHLY reccommend that or the new complex by the new rink. I love that it's a bit removed from Campus and it has more of a Campus feel. Plus we have T Anthony's down there...trust me, you will want their food/subs after tasting the dorms lol. And now I think they scatter them, but when I went it was the jock dorms and I must say it was a tons of fun! To this day my closest friends are 2 of my freshman roommates (we had suites back then thank goodness). It was always safe as there are always people around, and they have various patrols to escort students etc. If anything I think the dorms went overboard in locking out people to make it even safer. BU is a melting pot. Yes there are lots from the east coast, but there are also tons from literally around the world and the country. You will meet people from everywhere. I think most of the dorms are typical....if you are lucky you can get one with a downtown view of Boston and the Charles River. That was pleasant. I'd suggest shooting for one of the large complexes (not 700 aka the zoo) for your first year or so, then if you prefer something more quiet there are other options. But the big dorms are just a great way to meet folks immediately. I was worried too but had friends the minute I dropped my bags. I was just thinking the other day I wish I could vacation back in my dorm with the same folks. It was such a good time I can't tell you. And Boston is such a fun town to go poking in. Some folks go in town more often than others, but bet you'll be heading in once or twice a week. BUT keep in mind later on you may well get an internship in Boston. This is one thing I referred to. While students at big colleges with big campuses far away from everything usually do projects and internships at fake companies or small places, Boston lets you do it with the big boys. I was studying sports communications, and while other folks were doing fake press kits, I was working on a project for the Boston Bruins (who were really good back then!). Just be sure to bring clothes for all seaons. The dorms can be hot as hell, and you will still hit summer weather, and luckily you are familiar w/bad winters so that won't shock you. If you have any more questions just ask....be prepared to have a great time! And fight for a decent dorm and I think you'll be very happy! And before you know it, you'll be wearing a Terrier's shirt. I'd put money on it!!! ;) |
