Travel Info Can somebody tell me about the city of Brockton, MA? I'm french and I have to spend some holidays over there Travel Tips I grew up in Brockton, and I won't lie... it's not the nicest of cities. It's flanked by nicer small towns, but Brockton itself? Well, I'd suggest avoiding the downtown area altogether. The west side of Brockton is nicer, obviously being a suburb it has loads of shopping centers, a mall etc. It's mostly middle-lower income families with it's fair share of less than desirable neighborhoods. It's one good point is that it's not far from Boston. It''s only about 30 minutes driving from the city and it's also close to beaches (Nantasket, Cape Cod, and Hampton Beach in NH.) Others I live half an hour from Brockton. Brockton is not always a safe city depending on where you will be living but I will give you an email of a French girl who has spent time in this area. gresle.ivanestelle@neuf.fr This is half hour from Cape Cod, 40 minutes to Boston and to Providence/Newport RI, less than 2 hours to New Hampshire and 4.4 hours to New York City. Very close to a lot of things. Good time to you We lived in Plymouth, MA for a period of time. While Brockton is within an hour of many great tourist spots, I would not suggest staying there, It is not a safe area. Unless you are used to urban type dangers, I would highly recommend finding another place to live. I know how ridiculous the cost of living is in MA, but your safety is so much more important! I live on the Holbrook-Braintree line, about 20 minutes away. It's not the best--but not the worst place to be. Transportation is good in the area, and it is convenient to Boston. To give you another perspective, it's a city with many immigrants from all over the world but not a worldly city. Good working class people. You may misinterpret a bit some comments of prior Answerers. Brockton is a working class city ("une ville du - or is it de la? -proletariat" in French.) Think a bit of a very small Marseille without the sea and sea-based economy, or maybe like Clermont-Ferrand or Lille or Nancy. However, in France such places still have architectural charm and are vibrant with people on the streets and markets and small magazins. Not so in the USA, where people depend on cars to take them to les shopping centres on city outskirts and live usually in separated houses or apartment buildings, and often much of the downtowns of such cities in America are dead or mostly offices and parking lots . So Brockton's centre-ville is usually deserted mostly and there is almost nothing to see or do. However, Brockton is still much better and safer than thousands of similar American villes du proletariat. And, fortunately, there is both train and bus service to Boston (actually it should be considered "Boston/Cambridge" which is one of America's most vibrant and European-like great, large cities. |
