Relocating from FL to MA?

My wife and I are trying to find somewhere new to live. We have lived on long island, NY, both of us for over 20 years. We dont want to go back there, but, we need a change from FL - there is nothing for a mid-20s couple to do here! Can anyone suggest a place around boston to rent for a while? We currently own a house in FL, but I dont want to jump into owning a new place there. Any advice on where to stay AWAY from when it comes to renting? Any advice would totally rock!

Yeah Boston's great for young people (I'm in my mid 20s as well). Unfortunately if you look at housing prices you will not be able to afford to buy here most likely (unless you have lots of equity in your place in Florida and/or you make a lot more than me, haha). Also it depends on whether you want in the city or not. I'd check out Allston/Brighton, Jamaica Plain, Cambridge, Brookline, or Somerville (especially Davis Square area) if you want more urban areas, or maybe Quincy, Malden, Waltham, or Watertown, if you want more suburban. Or even further suburbs such as Wakefield, Melrose, or Arlington are all better.

Areas to AVOID: In the city, avoid Roxbury, Mattapan, or Dorchester. Outside Boston, avoid Chelsea or Everett.

East Boston, Charlestown, and South Boston are all becoming better (as is much of Dorchester), but if you want to rent for a year or so to check out the city then I'd go with one of the other places.

yes, there are several places to stay away from (dorcester, southie, parts of jamaica plain).... but boston is in general a very safe city.
