Is Worcester,Ma the lamest city in the continental us?

Travel Info
176,000 people, no mall, 1 night club that gets at least a quarter full, high drug rate, lazy cops, hell not even a wal-mart does it get worse for a "modern" city?

I live on the Cape, I know Worcester, and in my opinion it is just a case of urban sprawl gone down hill. People live there and that's it. For the common person who does not want crack or heroin, you have to leave the city to have a good time. No one puts any real money into it because it is better spent elsewhere. Until the city spends the money to try to revitalize the economy and run out the riff-raff, it will just get worse until all the business (not associated with drugs and prostitution) is gone and the economy gets to the point where it won't be able to recover.

It is a close second to Utica, NY.
If you don't like it, move. Why don't you come to Lowell............
Having a shopping mall or a Wal-Mart doesn't make a city not lame. Actually, Wal-Marts are pretty lame - I haven't been inside one in more than 5 years and I don't miss it at all. Wal-Marts actually make a city WORSE in many cases. How about the fact that Worcester has a (surprisingly) good art museum? Or the fact that there are several colleges and universities there? That said, Worcester DOES kinda suck (meaning it's economically depressed). Despite all of the stuff it has you're right about the high drug rate and bad cops and stuff like that. I wouldn't want to live there.
I live in a town that borders on Worcester, and I'm not sure which city you're talking about.

Certainly every city has its problems, and Worcester is one of them. An airport that can't sustain a commercial carrier. Can't support a downtown shopping center. And what city doesn't have a drug problem?

On the other hand, UMass Memorial calls Worcester home. A number of cultural centers are there. DCU Center hosts a number of major events. Minor league hockey, baseball, and arena football are there. And civic leaders have made efforts in recent years to revitalize the core.

Having a Walmart is overblown, so I wouldn't call that progress. I credit residents for ensuring that Walmart doesn't completely overrun their community.

I've been to Utica, and by all accounts it's worse there economically than Worcester.

As a former Chicagoan, I take offense to having my birthplace lumped in w/ Detroit and Newark. Worcester has a way to go upward to reach Chicago.

Lame? Find another city to pick on. Worcester ain't it.
Worcester the city does suck, but you arent familiar with it. In my opinion, shrewsbury, auburn, millbury and grafton are part of worcester....the way brookline, newton, JP, roxbury, somerville and charlestown are part of boston. There is a lot of stuff in those surrounding towns (including a mall, a walmart, night clubs). There are also a bunch of night clubs in worcester unless they closed them all down. Youre probably talking about the palladium being the "only" one in town, but have you looked across the street?? Irish times' top floor is a night club. On that street alone there are 3 or 4, and I know there are others.

I forgot about the outlets....thats kind of a mall.

The people in woosta are trashy, for the most part. They are stuck in between the hicks of western mass and the pricks of boston, what do you expect?

Yes, worcester could be so much better. you ever been to detroit, newark, chicago....or ANYWHERE down south??? There are some bad cities out there that make worcester look like beverly hills.
