If you had the choice to go to Bournemouth or Brighton which would you choose?

I am visiting a friend in August and would like to see the Coast. She recommends going to Bournemouth because it is less touristy, but there are certain places in Brighton that are recommended by travel books. (I'm from the U.S.) What are your opinions?

Travel Tips
Depends what you are looking for - Brighton has a better night-life (big gay scene as well) but Bournemouth is definitely less touristy and more about the typical English 'seaside'
