Is Brisbane a nice place to live?

Travel Info
I am 28. I have a girlfriend and step son of 6. We are moving to OZ from the UK. We wanted a job in Perth or Melbourne but the only job I could secure was in Brisbane. I have concerns that (1) It is too hot all year round (2) it has a somewhat Las Vegas style rep i.e. flashy with no class. Is this the case?

Travel Tips
1. Brisbane isn't hot all year round, we have 'winter' too. Its nice. It is a sub-tropical climate - quite interesting with the humidity, electrical storms, sun-showers and beautiful constantly sunny days.

2. Brisbane is one of the fastest growing economic capitals in the world due to our international airport and seaport, urban sprawl, cheap living and great weather. Lots of opportunities here.

3. Brisbane is laid back, small enough to be friendly, big enough to not get too bored in. Its not flashy at all. There are plently of places with loads of class and plenty of places with no class but with interesting, individual feel and cultures.

4. Brisbane is near some of the most beautiful beach, mountain and rainforest areas in Australia.

5. You should get an air conditioned place or buy an air conditioner as soon as you get here so you can sleep well at night and not get too crabby. Don't wear suits to work, no one will probably expect you to anyway.

6. You need a car to live here, its a huge pancake city and no one thinks much of the public transport system unless you live near the city (then its pretty good).

7. The city is built around a big river. You can live near the river and have nice views or go have picnics and stuff.

8. We have good cafes and restaurants.

ok... maybe I should shut up as I too many people might move here.

l would think so the weather would be nice,
scooby,doo,
Las Vegas? No, not really. It doesn't have the culture of Melbourne - but it's nothing like Vegas. It's got great weather. Humid in summer, though. Close to beaches and theme parks. But don't base your decision on Yahoo Answers...
Too many dangerous spiders and snakes for my liking. I also find the people from Australia a little too loud and brash. Why don't you try taking a virtual tour of Brisbane on the internet, that should give you a feel for the place. Good luck.
1) Brisbane's weather is absolutely fantastic almost all year round. At the peak of summer (Late Dec, Early Jan) it can get unbearably hot, but we all cope, and over that period we tend to just stay indoors or at the beach. You'll adapt quickly (you're a young couple), plus with airconditioning everywhere nowadays and maybe the possibility of flying back to the UK for Christmas, it shouldn't be too big a deal.

2) I grew up in Brisbane my whole life, and find your Las Vegas style comment really funny. Las Vegas would be the last place on earth I would think of Brisbane as similar to. Brisbane does sometimes get nick-named "Bris vegas" but this is in an "ironic" sense: Brisbane is basically like an oversized country town. It doesn't really have a strong cultural scene (there isn't the population to support it), but it certainly isn't flashy or classless. In fact, "flashiness" is far less tolerated in Brisbane than it is in Sydney or Melbourne. If you're from London, you may miss the city-life or cultural aspects that big cities bring, but I think Brisbane would be a great place to raise a family.

The Gold Coast (an hour or two drive south), is a different matter... (that whole city is geared for tourism, and could be quite fairly compared to Las Vegas).
I grew up in Brisbane, but now live in Sydney.
