Travel Info What is it like living in townsville qld aust? Travel Tips Oh Lord...never, never, never move to Townsville You will wish that you lived in Cairns about four hours north! the only thing that Townsville has going for it are the North Queensland Cowboys and they play their home games there. I live in Cairns and anyone will tell you that they hate going to Townsville. Its just a town around a red hill in the centre. Its boring and believe me when I tell you they have a huge problem with drunk and disorderly Aborignial people. The weather is a lot drier than Cairns and I would definelty not call Townsville the "entrance" to North Queensland as Townsville is not a good representation of the majority of North Queensland which is beautiful and green and tropical. Townsville is more like the woods, its dry and red and not very pretty. Also, their casino and tourist facilities are garbage compared to Cairns. Others Well, I haven't lived in Townsville but I have visited there often enough! Townsville is considered hte "gateway to the North" (as in Queensland). The weather is hot and humid, but very pleasant. Winter is extremely mild...almost non existant. Just off the coast (short ferry trip) is Magnetic Island (Maggie). Fabulous place to visit for a day or a short break. There is a bus, or you can bring your car over on the ferry, or hire a little mini moke to get aorund on. There are lots of secluded beaches you can stop off at. Townsville itself is pretty cosmopolitan with all the normal facilities and amenities one would expect. There is a Casino there and a variety of bars and clubs if you like your nightlife. Not too sure on the population breakdown sorry, there is a large defence base there and also a healthy mixture of indigenous residents. Watch out for jelly fish in the summer seasons!!! I also havn't lived there, but have visited quite a few times and have friends who have moved from Townsville. Townsville is a fairly large regional city in Queensland, with around 160000 people in the area. This means that it's not a small town, but conversely isn't a huge town. The weather is nice. Warm pretty much all year, but can get hot. Fairly laid back environment. Things move slower (but not in a bad way!) than other much larger cities.
