How do planes know which runway to land on at an airport? |
Travel Info How do planes know which runway to land on at an airport? Travel Tips I believe they have dispatchers who tell them where to land. From there, they follow the signs that are posted on the runways. Others By using a radar, silly! Have you ever heard of the Control Tower? Air traffic control tower Knobody really knows. Its magic i think! By using Radar, Radio, and Control Tower to tell. In large airports the pilots are instructed as to which approach to take and which runway to land on by the airfield tower control, which identifies & tracks them via the aircraft's transponder, radar, and pilot communication. In small, uncontrolled airports they get an indication of which way & how strong the wind is blowing by checking out the wind sock or other ground-based indicators and land on the appropriate runway (if there is more than one) after communicating their intentions to any other planes in the vicinity via radio. |
