Is australia really very racist? |
Travel Info im a modern muslim woman & i want to visit australia for a holiday is it safe? i heard that they hate muslims? Travel Tips We don't hate Muslims. It is just that the government has been doing a little fear-mongering lately with the war on terror. Even though Australian security forces are focussing on shutting down any potential problems with religious extremist groups here, unfortunately the mainstream Muslim community has been 'tarred with the same brush' to an extent by the media. Added to this the fact that some Australians are very slow to realise that the definition of Australian is different than 20-30 years ago - we are not simply an Anglo-Saxon nation with some overseas add-ons. We are truly a mixing pot of all cultures. The general rule-of-thumb goes like this: Give us a nice smile and Aussies will be stepping over themselves to help you out and make sure you enjoy your holiday. Simple, really. Others well i don't hate anybody unless they pissmeoff & i dont know anybody who hates muslims but like everyplace you will find ppl who are racist Australians especially in Brisbane are very nationalistic and racist. They live in a big foam bubble and believe that instead of being english/scottish/irish migrants that they were here since time immemorial, this delusion is very handy when ragging out newer immigrants whose hairdos and garb frighten them. None of them of course realise that the term "give it a burl" was actually brought here from scotland,if you visit plse remember they are not real immigrants only evil non anglo people are. 3rd gen australian who doesnt read the daily telegraph. im a modern muslim woman too and wearing hejab: when i was there..which was for work related purpose.. ... it happens that i was travelling alone.. i was sort of held up by the security there.. they were asking me alll sorts of questions for nearly half an hour..thank god that nothing happen as i have the proper documents.. but somehow i feel that i was wearing hejab was the reason why i was "detained" ...mabye just randomly selected .. no idea.. even if i take out my hejab .. they would still know im muslim coz my passport photo , i wear hejab... sighh.. people.. other then that so far the local people are quite friendly and customer service is good.. they are willing to help out ... . and i have yet to find anyone really racists.. Not all are racist.I would try to adjust a little like the woman commenting that her scarf was probably the reason. If you travel you have to adjust. Some things have nothing to with racism. But it is true that xenofobia is more overt in Austria unfortunately. This is not a reason for not going there. Most of the time you will see people pretending to ignore you.Haha.. Australians do not hate Muslim's but they will not tolerate the extremists who give all Muslims a bad name. |
