Tips on car rental/driving in Baja? |
Travel Info I'm thinking about renting a car and taking a leisurely drive from Cabo San Lucas up to Mulege or Santa Rosalia in late March. Does anybody with experience driving/renting cars in that part of the world have any advice to offer? Travel Tips Hola! Yes, I have alot of experience driving the Baja. I would recommend making reservations with your favorite rental agency prior to coming. Most have kiosks by the airport now, so getting the car as you arrive at the airport is easy. You can travel either way to La Paz - the pacific side or the sea of cortez side. Both are scenic and both have great little towns to visit. Then past La Paz is a nice little drive to Santa Rosalia and Mulege. There is so much to see and do in each town and Its hard to recommend things because I don't know what your interests are. Keep in mind, rental cars have different licence tags, so the locals know you are a tourist. All the roads are maintained well by mexican standards. There is a government service called the 'green angels' which are guys in tow trucks that drive up and down the baja and help people who are having car trouble for free. You will usuallly see them as you are driving. Use all your common sense and safety practices while driving in Mexico. I highly recommend NOT driving at night, or going off the beaten track on your own. Here are some good websites to check out. It's a long drive on narrow 2 lane roads. The weather should be good but it will be very dry that far from the rainy season. Should be interesting http://bajaferries.blogspot.com/... We rented a car through Dollar rental in San Jose Del Cabo in September 2005. We drove north to see the Hotel California. It is a barren drive for the most part, but it's fun nonetheless. I would definately recommend booking online, as you will save a ton of money. I think we rented a Jetta for about $40 a day. It's really easy to get around there, the only thing we had a slight problem with was parking in Cabo when we went to the market, but you will find that anywhere you go. |
