First time going to Banff.?

Travel Info
I will have 5 days to spend in Banff. Any must visit places, restraunts, stores, etc? Should I get a rental car at the Calgary Airport?

Travel Tips
I hope you are able to go hiking, do some driving away from Banff?? Spending all your time in town is like spending all your time in a tourist trap. *grin* I love wandering around Banff as there are some neat stores but the best part of the mountains, is indeed - the mountains.

Just north of Banff is Lake Minnewanka. There is a place for picnics and swimming. A ghost town (Bankhead) to stop and walk through (an old coal mining facility). If you drive around the loop you are almost guaranteed to see wildlife - usually elk and big horn sheep. Sometimes bear.

If you drive west from Banff you'll find Highway 1A - It runs between Banff and Lake Louise. You'll need to stop at Johnston Canyon. A beautiful walk up to the falls!

Lake Louise is a wonderful stop as well. The lake and glacier are beautiful and it's an easy walk walk around the lake.

On the drive up to Lake Louise you'll see a turn off for Morraine Lake. It's my favorite place in the mountains.

Oh, in Banff - I love the Christmas Store. :)

Hope this helps a little. Source(s): http://www.pc.gc.ca/pn-np/ab/banff/natcu...

Other Travel Tips
Definitely rent a car if you want to go anywhere worth seeing. Lake Louise is beautiful, I'd highly recommend going there, it's a little ways outside of Banff. A really good restaurant in Banff is called Earl's, it's right on the main drag. If I were you, I would go to Jasper instead of Banff. I've been to both and Jasper is TONS better. There are a lot of awesome hikes in that area, you really can't go wrong and I'd recommend doing some whitewater rafting, amazing! The Canadian Rockies are spectacular!
5 days in Banff is more than enough time to see everything as this town is tiny. If you like to drive than by all means get a car in Calgary and drive out to Banff. From the airport you are looking about an hour and 15 minutes. Things to see in Banff are as listed:

-Take a dip in the Hot Springs
-Take the Gondola up Sulphur Mountain
-Go to Cave & Basin National Historic Site
-Get Sweet Cancy from the Candy shop on Main Street
-Go to the Fairmount Banff Springs Hotel
-Take a day trip to Lake Louis or Jasper
-Eat at Melissa's Restaurant and Bar (Been around for 30 years)
-Golf or Ski (depending on the year)
-And finally just relax in the beauty of this awsome town
