What鈥檚 the Calgary Stampede all about? |
Travel Info Hi There, Could anyone please enlighten me as to what the Calgary Stampede is all about. I鈥檓 in Sydney, Australia and have some friends attending the event and wish to know a little more. Thanks in advance, OPM595 Travel Tips You were already given a great answer. I'll just add a couple things. It is indeed to celebrate our heritage. Ranches and farms were what settled this area. In addition to the rodeo there is a carnival and parties galore. The grounds are a huge midway as well. Rides everywhere. In the evening, the most popular event is the chuckwagon races followed by a musical event put on by the "Young Canadians" - kids from 5 to 18 yrs and then the fireworks show. Today the parade has just begun. There are 350,000 people downtown to watch it. It'll take 3 hours for the parade to run. For the 10 days of Stampede there are Pancake Breakfasts all over town. Stores, malls, hotels serve breakfast to whoever shows up. Pancakes, bacon, sausages. Yum! They usually have some country singer singing away, face painting and clowns for the kids and lots of entertainment. For the older "kids" there are beer tents and parties at every bar and pub in town. In other words, the Stampede is a 10 day party. People come from all over the world to enjoy it. You should come sometime. We'd love to have ya! Others It is the equivalent of a rodeo, perhaps the biggest. There's all kind of horses, cowboys, races, tricks, wrangling, wagon races, there's no end of entertainment. This is a list of just some of them, running over a period of a week.
