What do you think about Calgary? |
Travel Info I have been offered a job in Calgary. Actually at Foothills Medical Centre.. Does anyone have any feedback on this area? Or the hospital for this matter? Do you like it? Is it a nice place to live? My boyfriend would also be moving with me and he is just finishing school for electrcian..Do you know about opportunites in trades jobs out there? Currently I am from Ontario.. Thanks so much everyone Travel Tips I lived there for five years, but unfortunately my visa expired and I had to return to the UK. I found Calgary to be the best place I've ever had the fortune to live (and I've lived in a lot of places). It's clean, sunny most of the time, it doesn't snow much compared to the rest of Canada (as the mountains stop most of it), the chinooks can make a pleasant day in winter too. The people are friendly and crime isn't such a big deal. Plus GST is the lowest in all the provinces. If your boyfriend has anything to do with engineering he'll be snapped up in no time. I don't really know Foothills hospital (I think it's in the South West of the city??), but luckily, the South West is the more affluent area! [Edit] Whoops. How could I forget the mountains! The mountains are great. go for it... you'll love it. PS: one down side. If you like water, and there's a lot in Ontario, you might miss that a little!!!! Others Calgary is a great city. Big, Clean and lots of opportunity. Your boyfriend will definitely get a job Calgary is on a boom right now. You can get paid very well, great friendly place to live. If you like the eat coast you will like the west coast the people are laid back and outgoing. There is tons of jobs, nice place to live. Plus the scenery in Alberta is breath taking. Calgary is a wonderful city. I say this because I have lived here all of my 25 years. Your bf would have no trouble finding a job, as out housing market is booming and they are always in need of trade workerd, especially educated ones. FootHills Hospital is also wonderful, I delived both my children there, and my father had a long term stay there, and the staff were wonderful. My sister worked as a nurse briefly in the post op ward and loved it. Goos luck to you! http://www.gov.ab.ca/ http://www.discovercalgary.com/... http://www1.travelalberta.com/calgary/... These websites are very informative. Hope these websites answer all your queries. Also, whole of Alberta province and Calgary city has the following advantages. a strong and vibrant economy a young, skilled and productive workforce affordable living costs a strong commitment to innovation and knowledge-based progress a highly entrepreneurial and competitive business community a business-friendly province committed to responsible regulation a modern and efficient infrastructure an abundance of natural resources a beautiful natural environment Good Luck. I love Calgary. The foothills medical centre is nice (it is currently undergoing a rennovation). The city is clean, the people generally friendly, the cost of living isn't too bad (gas prices are okay, housing is a little expensive, no sales tax except for GST). Foothills hospital is in the Northwest by the University. It is the major trauma hospital for southern Alberta. Recently it has been very busy, I think they have had 10 days in the last 90 when they have been telling ambulances not to come because they are too full. Most of the northwest is quite nice if you like suburbs. The older areas near downtown and the university are quite expensive, except Bowness, for good reason. As you move further out from downtown, houses get cheaper and nicer but it is pretty well like any other suburb anywhere in Canada. I don't know of any specific trades opportunites but Calgary house builders have a year-long backlog because they have so much work and too few people. Of course there is the "we don't want an apprentice, we want a journeyman" attitude here. This can be an obstacle, a lot of companies want a quick dollar rather than investing in a worker. |
