Why is French a second language in Canada? |
Travel Info I recently moved to Calgary and I have yet to meet ANYONE who even remotely speaks French. Travel Tips Because it is the first language of approximately 35% of the population (principally in Quebec and New Brunswick, but there are also 1 million Francophones who live outside of Quebec, and there are Francophones in all Canadian provinces and territories), and also because Canada used to be a French colony. French is the official language of Quebec, and one of the official languages of the three Canadian territories and New Brunswick. In other provinces, French is only official at the level of federal institutions. Ontario alone has 500,000 French speakers, and some areas in the north of the province are predominately French speaking. A large number of Francophones in Quebec and northern New Brunswick are unable to speak English, and therefore it is important that they are able to access governmental services in their own language. Calgary has very few French speakers, and the province of Alberta as a whole is only 2% Francophone (although there are a few predominately French speaking communities). However, were you to move to Quebec in towns such as Chicoutimi and Sept-Iles you would find many people who can麓t speak English. Others Thats because the Frenchies are all in Quebec. It was settled by the French, and most of them stay in the general vicinity of Quebec. You wouldnt find many at all on the West Coast where you are. Quebec has threatened to succeed fromm Canada a lot of times in the past, since its really almost like a seperate country from the rest of Canada in Quebec. I think because of the "Quebek" region where the French is the main language. its a first language in Quebec and more Eastern Canada. but since Canada got their independence from France and started using the Queen of England (on the currency) as representation, the common language changed from French to English. because canada was a french colony it's because canada used to be a colony of france. http://canada.gc.ca/acanada/acpubhome.js... http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/i... |
