What is there to do in and around Calgary? |
Travel Info I'm going be visiting Calgary for 1 week in October. What should I make sure to see while there? Travel Tips What do you like to do? No matter what you should go check out Banff. http://www.discoveralberta.com/... Alberta's grandeur and beauty are obvious from the moment of arrival. Rolling foothills, intimidating mountains and prehistoric hoodoos are a few of Alberta's more distinct natural landmarks. Most impressive are Alberta's Rocky Mountains, which facilitate the world famous resort towns of Banff, Jasper, Canmore, Kananaskis, Lake Louise and Waterton. Dinosaur hunters flock to Drumheller, home of the acclaimed Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology, where the desert topography yields countless fossils and prehistoric discoveries. Alberta's rural heritage can be further explored with a visit to the vast farmlands of Alberta's Heartland, Southern Alberta and Northern Alberta. Calgary, home of the globally recognized Calgary Stampede, is best known for its warm hospitality, oil and gas industry and close proximity to the Rockies. Edmonton, the provincial capital, is often synonymous with its largest attraction鈥擶est Edmonton Mall. North America's largest shopping and entertainment complex offers over 800 stores and services and over 110 dining establishments, the epitome of one-stop shopping. Oktoberfest is on -- the rollicking, German, beer festival. Calgary's is patterned after the famous Oktoberfest in Munich, with HUGE halls where you eat, drink, sing, and watch all sorts of Schuplaken (german folk dances) and listen to oom pah pah music. It really is great fun! We visited Calgary last October (for our Anniversary and Thanksgiving). If you're here during October, you get to see the nicest Fall colours (in my opinion) of anywhere I've seen! Calgary Olympic Park has a Halloween show they put on last Halloween; my friends and I loved it! We got free tickets from the Radio; they were passing them out on Stephen Ave. Also, we went to the zoo, which was fun. You have to go to the Tower as well and look at the Rockies through the Binoculars. If you're really not sure of what to do, check out tourismcalgary.com It was a really good website, and I got a lot of Brochures and coupons from them. Order their free Travel Guide; It saved us money on admissions, restaurants, hotels, etc.! Enjoy Calgary! the zoo is great! and when already there, go to canmore/banff. it's just a little longer than an hour to those two places and it is a great drive. Banff and Lake Louise Walk through the +15 passages in downtown, make sure to stop at the Devonian Garden and note how the architecture and the lifestyle of the city has comfortably adjusted to the northern climate. A hike in Fishcreek park and a visit to Heritage Park could be fun too. You will get free breakfast at the Heritage Park if you come before 10am. You can stop at the Deane House restaurant for a murder mistery fun, Banff, Lake Louise. Jasper and Ice fields are unique and will leave a great lasting impression. Transportation to/from Calgary is readily available, but you need at least a day for Banff/Lake Louise and a day for Jasper and Columbia Ice fields so plan accordingly. |
