We麓d like to go to Calgary, Canada for our 2nd wedding anniversary, but where to go on winter time? |
Travel Info is it too cold? Travel Tips It can get cold in Calgary, but as long as you dress appropriately, you will still have a great time. I personally think the city is it's most beautiful in the winter when there is a bit of snow on the ground. There are often Chinooks, which are warm winds that melt the snow and leave the city quite comfortable. Watch the locals - if there is no one else outside, you probably shouldn't be either. Even when it is chilly, there are still tons of things to do inside. Here are a few ideas for you. Calgary Zoo - there are indoor and outdoor areas Canada Olympic Park - home of the 1988 Olympics Go to an NHL Hockey game - or just tour the Saddledome - home to the Calgary Flames Spruce Meadows - International equestrian arena Devonian Gardens - indoor gardens in the middle of downtown Olympic Plaza - Outdoor ice-skating in the middle of downtown Climb the Calgary Tower - Spectacular view! Museum of the Regiments, Glenbow Museum, Heritage Park, Fort Calgary, Telus World of Science, Spaceport, etc, etc, etc... Of course there are also Banff and Kananaskis Country within a short drive as well for outdoor recreation. Enjoy your trip, and have a Happy Anniversary! Other Travel Tips Definately go to Banff, and see the mountains. Yes, it will be cold. Winters here are up and down, they have gotten milder. We have had several Christmas's without snow. But the snow is pretty and fluffy and winters are usually bright and sunny. I grew up in Alberta. Banff....nothing more romantic than sitting by the fire drinking wine after a day of skiing! Good lord why?? I hate Calgary personally I lived there for four years, escaped and then had to go back for six months over the winter and now am finally safely in Europe. It might be tolerable in the summer but it is friggin cold in the winter. Granted you might get a chinook so that is will be not too cold but it is still an unpleasant place. People from Calgary are under the impression that it is a wonderful place but they are comparing it to Edmonton for the most part. There are bums everywhere and the service is some of the worst I have seen in the world. Most everything touristy is over priced and not usually worth actually paying money for. If you have to go in Winter then at least go to Banff and ski or better yet head to Vancouver and then go to Whistler and ski. I think if you are going to make the trip then go in the summer at least then you can go to Kananaskis Country and go horse backriding, you can even go on long camping trail rides. The white water rafting is great there. And there is so much wild life. If it is your anniversary then might I suggest going to Montreal for something a little more romantic. It is a beautiful French city but everyone pretty much speaks English. Just a thought. Calgary can be very cold in the winter but it can also be warm and beautiful. Calgary gets chinook winds which are warm winds that blow in over the mountains and the temperature can rise 20 degrees in 12 hours! The sking around Calgary is super exspecially in Lake Louise and Banff and there is a lot of skating and cross country sking as well. I think you'd really enjoy it so go and have fun! |
