We are planning a trip to Canada will we nee passports? We live in the us?

Travel Tips
You don't need a passport to get into Canada.

As of January 1, 2007, you WILL need a passport to get back in to the US.

Prior to then, you need proof of citizenship (birth certificate) and a government issued photo ID (drivers license). Minors (under 18) , if not traveling with both parents, must have a signed letter from the non-accompanying parent/s authorizing the trip.

Others
Yes you will. Travel through Canada changed in the last year or two. A driver's license or birth certificate won't work anymore. You have to have a passport now.
Passport or proof of U.S. citizenship such as a birth certificate, naturalization certificate, and photo ID required. Minors (under 16) traveling alone or in someone else鈥檚 custody must present written authorization, signed before a notary, from the parent(s) or guardian. Visas are not required.
You well need a passport after Dec. 31 of this year.
For now until then the normal form of ID works.
U.S. citizens do not yet require a passport to visit Canada, nor do Canadian citizens have to have one to visit the U.S., but the requirement is coming soon. Click here for more info:

I am a U.S. citizen but live in Canada. I work in the U.S. You do not need a passport. You do need a photo id. They are talking about forcing everyone to have a passport, but the border patrol told me last week that they will never be able to enforce it because it would hurt the tourisim. He said the rumor is that they will recind the decision soon. So to answer your question, as of right now NO you do not need a passport.
I just went through this trying to get into Niagra Falls Canada side....

You need either a U.S. Passport OR a original/certified Birth Certificate-this applies to minors as well. Please keep in mind you can drive into Canada easy enough, it's trying to get back into the States where you'll run into an issue if you don't have the required docs...

Rules have changed recently in that a passport or birth cert are required and effective jan 1, 2007 you will be required to have a passport for travel into Canada, birth cert will no longer cut it.
