Going to Canada January do i need to rent 4x4 to go Rockie mountains or is car sufficient?

Travel Info

:)

Travel Tips
Just a regular car will do, the highways are kept clear and any rental will come with all season or winter tires.
4x4's are good in the snow, but can make life more miserable on ice if you dont know how to drive them properly on ice. All too often I see people driving like maniacs (taking quick corners on ice) in SUV's thinking they are good in winter, but on ice they are much worse than your typical front wheel drive car. But get insurance anyway because you just never know. Not to mention you need to rely on other peoples' driving skills as well as your own when on a winter road.
If you are staying in Banff, all highways are kept very clear in the winter, and likewise with hitting the ski resorts such as Sunshine, Lake Louise, Norquay, etc. You may also want to take advantage of the ski busses that head up to the hills from Banff (such as the Brewster line). Other Travel Tips
get a landrover or a hummer - the roads will be frozen in parts with layers of ice like rock - your tires will burst with a car and you will freeze to death. Get insurane - a cell phone - a GPS - get really good road side assistane insurance. I would suggest going in May - the passes will be clear. Just take a plane and let someone else drive if you are going in January to ski - lots of coaches and trains -- train is via rail and coach is greyhound
No, a car is fine. They keep the highways and roads clear.
I live in Alberta
a car will do, the roads are very well looked after.
a car will do fine for the most part.
the roads are taken care of. although if you are moving to Alberta, a good set of snow tires will make your car have more traction than some 4x4s.

as for skiing in banff www.skibig3.com -- is where i booked my vacation last year. Sunshine was my favourite. but get the tri-lift ticket and try all the slopes around there. have fun mate
