Going to Calgary Stampede next year - nyone know where to get tickets, reasonable priced places to stay? |
Travel Info Travelling between Calgary and Vancouver. Where are the dont miss places. Is it worth staying in Vancouver or better to go over to Victoria. Any info appreciated Travel Tips If you want cheap tickets for the Stampede, go to Safeway, but you will not save THAT much. Tickets for Stampede are pretty much priced the same everywhere you go. As far as reasonable places to stay, if you say you are travelling, it means you will have wheels, and I would suggest you think outside downtown Calgary , as everything doubles in prices during Stampede WHEN you can find somewhere to stay. Check places like Okotoks, High River and Airdrie, which are about an hour's drive on a highway from the Stampede's grounds. Their rooms will probably be more affordable if you promise not to drink and drive! For the second part of your question, if you travel Calgary-Vancouver, you will be in the heart of the Rockies ! Do not miss Lac Louise, Banff, make a point of seeing Jasper, the Columbia Ice field., Kananaskis Country ...And depending on the route you choose in BC, there is The Okanagan Valley with its orchards, Shuswap Lake and its house boats., the Fraser Valley and its breathtaking sceneries. So do your homework, get the old map out, and check out what interests you. After traveling these routes for 15 years now, I am still amazed at the beauty I can find everywhere...... I don't know where you are from, and if you know, but there is a lot more to see around Calgary than the Stampede. Do some research on Drumheller..couple of hours drive from Calgary, they have a world renown Dinosaur center/museum called the Royal Tyrrel Museum that will knock your socks off..You cannot find anything like this anywhere else on earth..... Also Edmonton - few hours drive as well- has West Edmonton Mall, which is one of the biggest shopping center in the world with a ice rink, mini golf course, and over 800 shops, restaurants,bungy jumping, lake with waves and beach........ Of course, it is worth staying in Vancouver, or Victoria....both are beautiful cities, with lots to offer, parks, beaches, nice places to visit, eat....but remember that Victoria is on the Island and you will have to deal with ferries which could easily set you back many hours - ferries are busy in the summer and you could easily have to wait for a sailing - They basically sail every 2 hours so if you miss one, you have to wait 4 hours, add the ride itself for another 2 hours and then your day is gone.......plus a few dollars on top of it ..... There are a few must sees in Victoria in the summer. #1 is the whale watching tours, it is incredible. The wax museum is really good. The parliment buildings are good to see too. I like Craigdarach castle and you can see Royal Roads where Xmen was filmed. Hotels aren't that cheep but try to search for bed and breakfast and search on expedia.ca. Stamede in my opinion is a rip off. I have been to a few because I lived in Calgary for a few years. The best ticket deal is at Safeway and get the ride pass or a 1minute ride will cost you $5. For hotels also try www.expedia.ca but book in advance as everything is booked up for Stampede. you can buy at the gate , they sell grandstand and front rows ,bleecher seats ,etc also they sell by events like the chuck wagon races and they also sell seats according to daytime or evening events,stay in vancover and take a day trip over to the island and also go to banff and lake louise, whistler also Tickets are best purchased from Ticketmaster, (a long time in advance) or you can check e-bay. They have a lot of tickets for sale there usually. Also, check the papers, Calgary Sun or Calgary Herald. There are tons of hotels in Calgary, but my suggestion to you is that if you want to be anywhere near the Stampede, make a reservation NOW. Don't wait. As for the Vancouver/Calgary Drive, if you have kids, there's miniature land, there's the suspension bridge, there's the Enchanted Forest. All nice places. The bridge is nice for adults too, although I think they charge too much for the sake of a three minute walk. They have a little gift shop that only Bill Gates could afford to shop in. And as for the staying in BC, well it's all about what you want to see. Vancouver has some beautiful sites, but it's still the "big city". Victoria is much more beautiful, but it's not Van. An added note to the answer above me, there's Cochrane as well which is only 15 mins. from the NW end of Calgary. Beautiful town, country themed. You'll love it. |
