What is it like in Calgary socially and professionally? |
Travel Info Im 24 and I have a ton of friends that have moved out west to get on the money train. I am a professional with a marketing/business development background and am considering moving out west. Is it worth it? Do you really make that much more? What about housing costs? Travel Tips It's REALLY difficult to find housing here. As mentioned above, the vacancy rent is extremely low, apartment buildings all have waitlists, and house prices are astronomical. There are great jobs to be have and you'll make great money, but you'll end up spending it all. I live in a small, second-floor studio apartment in the Northwest, and I end up paying about $710 per month in rent and utilities. I have to pay about another $50 per month for a parking spot, and a bus pass runs about $60 per month I think. Public transport isn't great here; infrastructure hasn't caught up with growth (and I'm not sure it's going to). Women are miscarrying in hospital waiting rooms because there is no space. Calgary's population is growing by 30,000 people every year. I think the city is eventually going to implode. Others If you are happy with where you are and are making decent money my suggestion would be not to move. Yes, there is money to be made but the cost of living may offset the higher earnings. The vacancy rate in Calgary is about 0% and even if you could find a decent apartment expect to pay. To purchase a home starts in the $400,000 range and upwards and expect to be in a bidding war with others. If you're still in interested in the hassles of apartment hunting then by all means move because you'll likely have several job offers. Check out HRDC to find out what is available for jobs or the Calgary Herald or Calgary Sun. Both newspapers also have an extensive job listings. Hope this helps. My family lives there and i went 2 times in Calgary's, socially people are so nice and kind they will help no problem and I'm not saying everyone but most people.Professionally my cousin says it is so easy to find a job they now pay for any courses you are missing to get that job and the salaries are so high that hardly any teenagers stay in school cause they could get enough money working at an easy job..And housing.....my Aunt is moving in a condo cause its to expensive to keep her house so houses in Calgary are more expensive.! |
