Main reception switchboard - answering and directing all incoming calls to the hospital. Each floor also has a unit clerk who handles calls coming in to that particular floor. Many are patient inquiries, doctors calling to check on patients, lab, etc. This is a more specialized field of phone operator. Main reception switchboards are very, very busy and you could find yourself answering up to 400 calls per shift - yes, it's shift work - the hospital never closes. Hope this helps.
